Walter had said something about needing Astrid to come to the lab to-day and look after something or, rather, someone, very important. He had to go and make sure Peter didn't make a bad house-choosing decision. Something about lighting.

So she comes in, figuring Walter has an experimental animal in there. Or maybe he just forgot Gene's name.
